  • Bas van de Valk, MD
  • Vanessa Zoras, Registered Dietitian and Sport Science Nutritionist
  • Lizzie Deignan MBE, Professional cyclist for Lidl-Trek, former World Champion (2015)

To perform at your best and stay healthy, fuelling can’t be one-size-fits-all. With many voices offering advice, it takes nuance and context to know what’s right for you.

Join sport dietitian Vanessa Zoras, physician Bas Van de Valk, and former world champion Lizzie Deignan for a practical, evidence-based look at how to fuel for peak performance without compromising long-term health. They’ll unpack common misconceptions around carbohydrate fuelling and body weight manipulation, outline the risks of under-fuelling and REDs, and share strategies you can confidently put into practice. Lizzie will also offer her perspective on how she balanced fuelling with the demands of elite cycling and how to apply these approaches within your team environment.

This session will help you fine-tune your approach, spot red flags early, and understand the foundations to help you build a fuelling strategy that supports both sustainable performance and long-term health and well-being.

Supporting Elite Athletes to Fuel for Performance and Health: Building an effective environment

Supporter members:

Wednesday 19 November 14:00 MST / 20:00 GMT / 21:00 CET

Thursday 20 November 07:00 AEDT / 09:00 NZDT

Speakers

  • Bas van de Valk, MD
  • Vanessa Zoras, Registered Dietitian and Sport Science Nutritionist
  • Grace Brown, Olympic ITT Champion, former ITT World Champion (2024)

Disordered eating, eating disorders, and unintentional under-fueling limit rider performance and threaten long-term health. The high energy demands of racing and the pressures to maintain low body weight place elite riders at particular risk of problematic low energy availability (LEA) and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). As a staff member, your role in supporting rider health and well-being is critical to performance.

Join sport dietitian Vanessa Zoras, physician Bas Van de Valk, and Olympic Time Trial Champion Grace Brown for an evidence-based discussion on how to optimise performance without compromising health. You’ll learn how to build the necessary monitoring to identify the early signs of LEA, REDs, and disordered eating, what to do to support riders at various stages of severity/risk, and how to structure an environment that supports long-term success.

Vanessa Zoras is a Registered Dietitian and Sport Science Nutritionist at the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific supporting elite athletes including the UCI Pro Tour team Israel Premier Tech. With nearly a decade of experience, she has provided practical, science-based nutrition support to para and able-bodied athletes across endurance, ultra-endurance, speed-power, weight-class, aesthetic, and contact sports. Vanessa holds a Masters’ of Science from the University of Victoria, where she co-designed an athlete-facing tool with athletes and experts to communicate severity and risk of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). She combines research-backed strategies with real-world experience to help athletes reach their full potential.

Bas van de Valk is a physician with extensive work experience in eating disorder treatment in athletes and non-athletes. His professional goals include improving early detection and treatment of eating disorders in athletic populations, aiming to improve treatment outcomes by tailoring treatment to the unique needs of athletes and facilitating healthy sports participation in athletes recovering from eating disorders. He’s currently working for Co-eur, a multi-disciplinary treatment center for eating disorders in The Netherlands and pursuing a Post-Master degree in Sports Medicine at KU Leuven, Belgium.
